The aim of this research is to collect data on how people communicate and learn language.
We appreciate your interest in participating in this online task. You have been invited to participate as you are 18 years of age or over and a native speaker of English from the UK. The lead researcher is Tianfang Chen, who is attached to the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics at the University of Oxford. This research is being completed under the supervision of Daniel Altshuler, and in collaboration with Sun Yat-sen University.
In this research, you will read the task instructions, complete a short comprehension quiz, and take part in an online language game. During the game, you will make decisions based on the information shown on the screen. This should take about 15-20 minutes. No background knowledge is required. The data are needed to study communication and learning in a language game.
No. Please note that participation is voluntary. If you do decide to take part, you may withdraw at any point for any reason before submitting your answers by pressing the ‘Exit’ button / closing the browser. However, we are only able to reimburse participants who complete all research activities. Participants who complete the study will receive £2 through Prolific.
There are no foreseeable risks associated with this research.
The data we will collect that could identify you will be your Prolific ID.
Your IP address will not be stored. We will take all reasonable measures to ensure that data remain confidential.
The responses you provide will be stored in a password-protected electronic file on University of Oxford secure servers and may be used in academic publications, conference presentations, and related research outputs. Identifiable information will be deleted when no longer needed. Research data with identifying information removed may be retained indefinitely.
The University of Oxford is the data controller for your personal data. The University will process your personal data for this research as a task carried out in the public interest. Further information about your rights is available from https://compliance.admin.ox.ac.uk/individual-rights.
The data you provide may be accessed by the research team, collaborators where necessary, and service providers such as Prolific for recruitment and payment.
